In A Vase On Monday: Autumn Views

DSCN9221

“Nothing is more fleeting than external form, which withers and alters like the flowers of the field at the appearance of autumn.”  ~Umberto Eco

Autumn is moving fast these days as the cooler temps hold on, and gray rainy skies add to the bit of melancholy I have been feeling.  Lots of blooms still in the garden and special surprises.  The monarch above was refueling in the garden on October 4th.  I doubt we will see others now as he must have been a lone straggler trying to catch up with his chums.

As the Harvest Moon was approaching at the end of September, I was out at dusk catching the almost full moon rise.  I heard the sound of geese in the distance traveling by moonlight.  See them in the right top corner.

And As I focused in on the moon…..

I caught this amazing shot.

Turning toward the setting sun, I then saw this view…..what a spectacular fall.

Autumn has given us many amazing views as we await the foliage fire we usually start to see mid-month.  And the cutting gardens are continuing to churn out wonderful blooms so forgive the repeat of flowers used in this week’s vases.

With the cooling of the air and soil, the cosmos will be ending soon.  So I picked a batch of tall, large blooms to showcase in their own vase.

I love how the petals dance in the waning light of October….

I had so many large cosmos, that I decided to cut more, and put them in the first vase I ever purchased.  This time I cut a couple of Tagetes as a wonderful contrast.  I also love the look of this vase on the window sill.  Of course I made a little posy to go with the larger vase.

Here are a few more views of the posy with Cosmos, CalendulaAntirrhinum and Alyssum.

  1. Wonderful autumn views, Donna! I can imagine the serene, chilly (?) evening and the sound of the geese flying “towards” the moon… Gorgeous shots.
Your vases are lovely, as always. Cosmos is one of the most delicate and pretty flowers I know.
Thank you for sharing and have a lovely week!

  2. Gorgeous captures! I love the leaves against the pink sky and the cosmoses are very pretty. We’ve had cold nights for a week now and almost all our flowers are gone. Have a great week, Donna!

  3. Oh, amazing views , indeed! So vivant and colorful! Beautiful blooms and so delicate in appeareance… Warm autumnal greetings!

  4. The moon with the geese is a wonderful shot Donna, well done for capturing and sharing it with us. No apologies needed for repeating the lovely Cosmos. Anyway I think that even with the same flowers you can achieve very different styles of arrangements; I’ve been using Zinnias for months and most of the arrangements have been quite different.

  5. I love the sound of geese flying overhead…sometimes they are so low you can hear their wings flapping, and the calls as they encourage the leader. Lovely pictures, and great Cosmos…I have some seeds ready to sow next year. Many thanks.

  6. Hello Donna, I love your pretty moon shots. The capture of the geese and moon is just awesome. And I love your beautiful cosmos. Lovely arrangement. Have a happy Monday and new week ahead!

  7. The first quote from Umberto Eco really affected me. It reminded me a little of something from Rumi: “Know that the body is like a garment. Go seek the wearer of that garment.” I loved your photos so much, beautiful beautiful captures Donna! The moon and the the geese in formation is stunning. When I hear that sound of geese traveling across the sky, I often stand in wonder thinking about whatever miraculous compass is hidden deep in those downy feathers guiding them home.

  8. Autumn is beautiful in your neck of the woods! Love the moon. Cosmos is one of my favorite flowers … the bloom seem to be constantly dancing!

  9. Oh wow, I am always impressed with your photos of flowers, but that moon shot is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing Donna, and also appreciate you helping me with ID’ing the flowers on my post. Have a great week 🙂

  10. Great photos of the moon with the geese and the sunset sky, Donna, and such pretty pink cosmos in your vases. Thanks for sharing. We see and hear the geese overhead too, but many are resident in the UK now so it’s hard to know if they are arriving from the north or just gathering in a different location.

  11. The cosmos look loving in the vase Donna. The weather has been glorious this weekend. We had our Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and today we went for a lovely long walk down by the bay … lots of water birds and gorgeous Fall colours.

  12. I love the simplicity of Cosmos – and can’t explain why I didn’t plant any this year. Best wishes for a great week of gardening, Donna!

  13. Ah! the serendipity of having your camera ready at just the right time, Donna, memorable moon and geese shot, and gorgeous glowing peachy sky colors and silhouettes. When I look at my wrinkles, I have to smile because my faith in the promised eternity to come in a heaven past imagination overcomes the transience of this life. Your ruffly pink cosmos are lovely, and look great in your special first cute vase with the gold flowers. I don’t even know what my first vase was. The first pretty vase manages to look both green and black.

  14. Oh a harvest moon is such a special moon. I know exactly what you mean by cosmos dancing. Autumn has been wonderful so far and we haven’t even started to get excited by leaf colour yet.

  15. Oh my goodness, Donna! Your photos of the geese and the sunset–wow! Talk about being in the right place at the right time and capturing the moment, so expertly! Nice, my friend. 🙂 Cheers!

    1. Isn’t it amazing to be able to capture such a shot….practicing being in the moment this fall has certainly paid off Beth!

  16. Your moon photos is spectacular, Donna, as well as all your photos and collages. Cosmos in a vase look so delicate and ethereal.

It is full autumn color here and I have been enjoying it all so much as it passes quickly at our altitude.

    Have a wonderful week!

    1. Absolutely true Chloris…cosmos are a great value for the number of flowers they just keep producing…I love that about them.

  17. I love cosmos — they are such valiant flowers — A few people here in our new apartment have them in their small planter boxes. (Maybe I’ll do that next year… we are on the terrace level.

I loved that you used the first vase you ever bought. Memories!!

    1. Sallie they would be perfect in a container to bring such a delight…and once you start cutting them, they just keep coming so many in fact that you will have plenty for looking at in the container and vase.

      1. Came back as I am replying to comments on my last post … And since your beautiful posts are always worth a second look, thought I’d make a second comment! I really loved your moon and geese shot! Remarkable timing, couldn’t have been a more perfect moment. Thank you again for sharing Autumns loveliness , even as the season wanes!

  18. I love to hear geese. We have them flying over here, but even after years of seeing them I am still compelled to go and find a gap in the trees to watch them when I hear their call. Fabulous moon shot!

  19. Donna that shot with the moon & the geese is just stunning – you should enter it in a competition! I really enjoyed all your flowers today – it is so sad that the lovely cosmos are coming to an end. My cosmos in pots around the house did very well, although I have not been deadheading and watering them for the last few weeks so they are ready to come out now. I am amazed that you have the first vase you ever purchased – I will have to rack my brains now to try and remember my first vase – it might be lurking around here somewhere.

    1. That is high praise so thank you Julie. My cosmos will flower like crazy until our first freeze. And yes it is funny that I still have my first vase and it has survived multiple moves….it is about 35 years old.

    1. We just had a frost while I was away and many flowers were spared so there are still flowers now even! I feel blessed.

  20. Donna your photo of the geese approaching the full moon is great, the setting sun photo is lovely, your beautiful skies, Frances

  21. Yes, your moon and geese shot IS amazing, Donna. Love your cosmos arrangements. We are expecting a hard frost tomorrow night, so tomorrow I will be cutting the last of the zinnias and other annuals to put in vases. I’ll be bringing in the plants I want to overwinter. I thought I was ready for the end of the gardening season and a good rest, but now its upon us I’m feeling sad. Stay warm! P. x

    1. I know what you mean Pam…it is sad when the flowers end….we had a bit of frost while I was away but lots of flowers were not affected. It is time to face the end of the garden….I still have to clean up and plant garlic.

  22. Wo, Donna, what a stunning picture with the moon and the geese – took my breath away! I was in the Pyrenees at the time and the moon was covered by clouds for part of the night. I also love the first pic of the cardinal sitting happily on the flowers, the fence makes a nice frame. Happy autumn days to you 🙂

  23. What amazing photos Donna! I just love the geese against the moon.
Cosmos is the best annual in town! Still flowering as strongly as it did in June ! I have never known them fail, whatever the summer is like. I grow them every year and just love them.

  24. Love the shots of the moon Donna – wonderful for you! We had our first hard frost last night and flurries of the flaky white stuff yesterday. That signals the very end. I had guests over the weekend and so my basil sits out in the Potager frozen – I think I can still use it to make pesto. I’ll try today. I did manage to bring in some of my potted plants and so it begins. It was literally raining leaves this morning. Yesterday, we took our guests to the lake – oh so beautiful. I am now feeling the urge to pack up and go. I can’t imagine if I had to stick out winter – so spoiled am I!

    1. We just got back from a family wedding in Denver and I am seeing we must have had a bit of frost here and there but most of my tender flowers are fine….squashes and nasturtiums out in the veg beds were hit with a hard frost. But cosmos, roses and dahlias close to the house are fine and even petunias…..we are looking at a trip in March to get away at the end of winter. Lucky you to get away.
