“It is now May. It is the month wherein nature hath her fill of mirth and the senses are filled with delights. I conclude it is from the Heavens, a grace, and to Earth, a gladness.” ~Nicholas Breton
I am so ready for May. My favorite month because spring gets into full swing, and it is my birth month. Not to mention all those May flowers. Yesterday was May Day. A day of celebration for me. Originally called Beltane, it is the celebration of fertility and manifesting. Beltane is the most prolific time for planting seeds which is just what I did. Our temps are finally rising into the 50s and 60s consistently with 40s at night now so I couldn’t wait to get planting.
I sowed dill, nasturtiums, zinnia, cosmos (in pots) and sunflowers (pictured here). I also planted my dahlias in the big pot out back. Gladiolas I ordered are coming soon and will go in a couple of containers too.
I am quite certain my herbs, rose and hydrangea in the front pots were killed off when the pots thawed in our warm February, and then were hit with below zero temps soon after. So I will be on the lookout to replace them. A local nursery I love always has such a great variety of plants so it will be a fun trip there this week. And early birthday present for me too!
I always like to gather a posy of flowers for luck to put at my front door threshold on May Day. This year it was slim pickings due to our delayed spring and the lack of flowers blooming now that I have only containers and a few plants that will bloom later this month and into summer. I picked grape hyacinths blooming in several areas, scilla, puschkinia, and one tattered marsh marigold from the new native plant garden. I was thankful to get these beautiful stalwart blooms still going due to our cool spring.
I also made another vase with the miniature daffodils and grape hyacinths (picture at the top of the post) that survived and grew through the crack in the landscape fabric. A testament to tenacity, strength and perseverance.
With these May Day vases I am linking in to the wonderful meme, In A Vase On Monday, at Rambling in the Garden.
