In a Vase on Monday – Contained(er) Fun

“In my garden, after a rainfall, you can faintly, yes, hear the breaking of new blooms.” ~Truman Capote

As I was in a bit of a slow down with blooms in my garden, I went to my local nursery to find plants that thrilled me to add to containers. What we call annuals as our winter would not sustain them.

There were a few plants blooming in the garden that I also wanted to add to a vase. This dark purple columbine, Aquilegia vulgaris (granny’s bonnets). A free plant as it was mis-labeled. This one is likely ‘Black Barlow’.

And a Siberian Iris, unnamed and mis-labeled as it was supposed to be white. I am delighted it is purple. And I had to cut a few for a vase.

Also blooming and singing to me to be in a vase, was this hardy geranium. I love the deep, dark pink.

Containers are filling in even with an onslaught of a beetle that is determined to suck the life out of many of my plants. This container is filled with two different purple Calibrachoa just after I planted the small pots.

It is filling in and drawing in lots of pollinators including this Hummingbird Moth; Hummingbird Clearwing (Hemaris thysbe).

I am loving this pink filled container with a pink container dahlia I used in a vase.

This trio on the back patio is filled with a red Nicotiana and two Gerbera daisies; pink and yellow. I used the yellow in a vase.

And my containers of flowers, especially cutting flowers, are still slow to grow. This month should kick start them, and I should see blooms in mid-summer.

Here are the vases….

The purple iris, yellow gerbera was placed on my dresser next to my grandmother’s picture from 1919. You can see it at the top of the post. I love the combo in the vintage bud vase.

And the dahlia, geranium, columbine vase in a favorite Belleek vase.

I was glad to combine these perennials and annuals from my garden to make two sweet vases. My home was happy too.

With these vases, I am joining in with the wonderful meme, In A Vase On Monday, from Cathy at  Rambling in the Garden.

  1. I’m glad you got yourself some annuals to brighten your containers while you wait for your garden to deliver its bounty, Donna. The columbine was a great find. The hummingbird moth pic is a delightful addition!

  2. Thanks for sharing your pots and planters, Donna. Like you, I find they are slow to get started and then all of a sudden they romp away and fill them up. Love that deep blue/purple aquilegia – I am always fascinated by the pleating on this type! Both of your little posies are lovely, and they are a reminder that size does not necessarily affect the pleasure we can get from our vases

  3. So pretty. I love the blues in containers and have an absurd number on my porch. Crazy plant ladies everywhere!
