In a Vase on Monday – On the Brink

Crocus

“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” ~Charles Dickens

I have always loved this quote to describe spring here in the northeast United States. One minute summer, the next winter. The swings in temperature and precipitation are huge. But we all flow with it grumbling as we do. And then I hear the bird song…the cheeps and chatters of birds happy to be back. They lighten my heart and I feel, ‘yes it is spring.’

Allium

We continue to be above normal for our winter and as March moves along. And as we arrive on the brink of spring, I have much happening in the garden albeit slowly. My garden knows more cold and snow are around so let’s not rush things.

Daffodils

Of course we are supposed to have snow and cold today. More is forecast as the 20th of March (spring) begins…chilly, wet and gray.

Honeysuckle

But as long as the bulbs grow and bloom in their own time, and the trees and bushes begin to sport their new green coats I will just keep riding the rush (or slow slog) of spring high into the sky with the birds.

For my first vase from my own garden, I took a crocus, an overwintered (outside) pansy, and one snowdrop just beginning to flower. I added a few hardy geranium leaves, and put them in my smallest vase.

An homage to the change in seasons and the resilient flowers that continue to march forward through any changes and challenges. Such an inspiration of me.

With this vase, I am joining in with the wonderful meme, In A Vase On Monday, from Cathy at  Rambling in the Garden.

  1. It must feel like a breath of fresh air when spring finally arrives, Donna. Your little collection of flowers are so pretty; I especially like crocuses and wish I could grow them in my garden. Sadly, my climate is too warm. <3

  2. A graceful little vase with lovely flowers from the garden. 🙂 No snow here, and we’re in the 60s for a few days…then back to “normal” highs in the 40s for a while. Happy almost spring, Donna!

    1. We got that storm last night so 40 now fierce winds and the couple of inches quickly melting. We are sodden as we had a couple of inches of rain prior to the snow. 60s this week and high of 40 next just in time for a cold start to spring.

  3. Spring has its own timetable in the country’s various regions but the one thing you can count on is that it’ll arrive eventually – in your case that may mean creeping in “on little cat feet.” I’m glad you found some blooms courageous enough to get things started, Donna.

    1. Thanks Kris. I am always glad when it comes a bit early. The snow that fell yesterday is mostly gone and the garden grows on.

  4. Pretty treasures. I’m happy for you being able to begin choosing from your garden again Donna. The crocus is lovely–I need to remember to plant some, but they don’t seem to stick around.

  5. Oh that Charles Dickens quote applies just as well as to our March days Donna That’s a lovely little vase full of late winter gems and spring is now really just round the corner.

  6. What a dear little vase Donna! You will no doubt catch up with us very soon – my snowdrops are just about over now and the crocus too. I love that quote! It reminds me of a Robert Frost poem with similar lines which I must seek out now. Have a good week!
