In a Vase on Monday – Summer Abundance

Our weather has been hot, but almost daily thunderstorms or even a quick drenching. That has helped some pots that were struggling. But it has definitely helped the few veggies we grow, and the cutting flower containers.

This heirloom ‘Brandywine’ is one of many tomatoes swelling and ripening. And the flowers are hanging in there even though I cannot do much gardening as I baby my knee. Nothing too serious, but it requires not to do any kneeling or squatting. Or even too much bending. So all that deadheading is not happening. Oh, well.

And these miniature sunflowers are blooming. They are perfect for cutting and a small vase.

And of course I had to use my grandmother’s blue vase. I wait every year to see these flowers, but I have to protect them from critters of all kind. They are worth it.

  1. What a beautiful blue vase… thanks grandma! And yes the daily thunderstorms here in NY are great for the grounds++veggies… but wish we could send all the extra water out west where they are in such drought and fire conditions. Take care of the knee… enjoy the rest of summer.

  2. The miniature sunflowers are gorgeous, Donn, and I love them in a vase. The ones I have grown here don’t seem to flower for very long – do yours?

    1. These are usually short stems of 8 inches with one flower per stem just for cutting. They do last long in the vase. The bigger ones do flower longer if I can get them going sooner. They will flower to the first frost. But us ya are quite tall and have multiple flowers. Not all varieties do unfortunately.

  4. The smallish sunflowers are perfect to fill that elegant blue vase, Donna! I’ve yet to have anything from my sunflowers this year but I haven’t given up yet!

    1. Thanks my friend. It’s a slow healing but I am pleased it is healing. That vase brings back many memories of her. ❤️
