August 1st is the wheel of the year seasonal celebration of Lammas and Lughnasadh, the first harvest festival, marking the end of summer and beginning of autumn.Ā LughnasadhĀ is ancient Gaelic, whileĀ LammasĀ is Anglo-Saxon/Christian.Ā
I always like to mark these seasonal celebrations. And what better way than to harvest flowers from my small container cutting garden. Beautiful first dahlia, ‘Labyrinth Two Tone’. And seed heads from clematis, Chacewater. Gorgeous from flower to spiky seed head (see top of the post). Plus a solitary cosmos and more nasturtiums. And an unexpected surprise.
These stunning flowers. I rarely see flowers on a scented geranium as they are annuals here, and they usually don’t have time for much blooming before the weather cools. But this citronella-scented geranium is next to the front door with morning sun and afternoon shade. So imagine my surprise to see the profusion of these incredible purply-pink flowers.
I had to use them in the bouquet with another surprise. The one zinnia blooming. I hope you are finding ways to celebrate the seasonal shifts.

That Scented pelargonium is magnificent, and must delight callers. You have done so well to grow these in tubs, and the Dahlia is particularly splendid Donna.

I do love scented geraniums! I’m sorry yours can’t manage the winter months there. They look great with that dahlia, though.
I wish I had the right indoor light to keep them going. But I will take it as it grows for now.

If you have a protected area you might just change your luck. I used a terra cotta pot and water it daily.

Oooh, both you and Kris have a Labyrinth in the vase this week, and I definitely feel swayed to get one for next year now lol. They’re just so lavish! That’s a really cute pelargonium, too — my citronella scented only produces the tiniest little flowers, so you really did get lucky!
I feel lucky. Yes we both had same dahlia although mine is a different color combo. Both are yummy!
